Intelligent document processing without an enterprise project

Alexander Krastev · 2026-10-19

Intelligent document processing (IDP) means software that does not just read a document but understands it: which number is the invoice total, which date is the due date, which clause is the notice period. IDP software used to mean a long enterprise project. It does not have to.

The pipeline, in four steps

Collect — documents arrive in a folder, by e-mail, or by upload: text PDFs, scans, phone photos.

Extract — an AI model reads each one (scans and photos as images, with OCR as a fallback) and returns exactly the fields you defined, in a strict structure.

Check — required fields, formats, ranges, sums that must add up, new or unusual values. Fields the model is unsure of are marked, and doubtful documents wait for a person.

Act — write to Excel, CSV or JSON, insert into a database, post to an API or ERP, e-mail a report, or pause for approval first.

Any document type, defined once

Invoices come ready-made. For anything else — contracts, receipts, delivery notes, application forms — you name the document type, list the fields and tick the checks on one page. No code. The same pipeline runs it on a schedule, on every new e-mail, or on demand.

On your own servers if you need it

AI document processing on-premise is a setting, not a separate product: run AIK on your own server with a local model and the documents never leave your network. With a cloud model, personal data can be masked before the call.

Pick the model with evidence

Run two or three AI models over the same sample of your documents and compare accuracy and cost side by side, then choose.
